A Vision For Temple

Guide to Serve

We ask God to guide us to take a step of faith and serve in an area of ministry if you don't already. All born again believers have been given a gift by the indwelling Holy Spirit to exercise both within and outside the church in a special way!

Throughout scripture, Jesus is our ultimate example of service to others. Serving others is presented as a fundamental expression of faith, humility, and love for God. Believers of God are called to put the needs of others before their own needs. In Mark 10:45 Jesus stated, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.” In the book of John, Jesus washes the feet of His disciples and instructs them. “If I then, the Lord and the Teacher, washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet.” (John 13:14)

If service to others is described as an expression of faith, humility, and love for God; what does this look like? The answers to these questions have been given to us in the user’s guide for life, the Holy Bible.

Humility and Selflessness - In Philippians 2:3-4, we are told, “Do nothing from selfishness or empty conceit, but with humility of mind regard one another as more important than yourselves; do not merely look out for your own personal interests, but also for the interests of others.” Put the value of others above that of yourself.

Following Christ’s Example - If you go and read Mark 10:45, it is stated that Jesus did not come to serve us but to serve others, “For even the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.“

Serving as unto God - Colossians 3:23-24 states, “Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men, knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.” Paul advises believers to work and serve with all of their heart, work for the Lord, and not for the masters of this world.

Caring for the Vulnerable - Both the Old and New Testaments repeatedly direct us to care for the disadvantaged. Matthew 25:40 reminds us that whenever we help one of our brothers and sisters we are doing it for Christ. “The King will answer and say to them, ‘Truly I say to you, to the extent that you did it to one of these brothers of Mine, even the least of them, you did it to Me.’“

BOOK OF THE MONTH

Martin Luther: The Man Who Rediscovered God and Changed the World

by Eric Metaxas

A book recommended by Dr. Chris Bazal

In a decidedly eclectic career, Eric Metaxas has written for VeggieTales, Chuck Colson, Rabbit Ears Productions and the New York Times, four things not ordinarily in the same sentence. He is a best-selling author whose biographies, children’s books, and works of popular apologetics have been translated into more than 25 languages.

On All Hallow’s Eve in 1517, a young monk named Martin Luther posted a document he hoped would spark an academic debate, but that instead ignited a conflagration that would forever destroy the world he knew. Five hundred years after Luther’s now famous Ninety-five Theses appeared, Eric Metaxas, acclaimed biographer of the bestselling Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, paints a startling portrait of the wild figure whose adamantine faith cracked the edifice of Western Christendom and dragged medieval Europe into the future. Written in riveting prose and impeccably researched, Martin Luther tells the searing tale of a humble man who, by bringing ugly truths to the highest seats of power, caused the explosion whose sound is still ringing in our ears. Luther’s monumental faith and courage gave birth to the ideals of liberty, equality, and individualism that today lie at the heart of all modern life.
