We ask God to guide us to discipline ourselves to be peacemakers so as to further promote unity among the body, which in turn glorifies the Prince of Peace, the Lord Jesus Christ!
|
The Bible describes peacemakers as actively working to create peace, reconciliation, and understanding. Jesus said, "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God" (Matthew 5:9), a core teaching from the Beatitudes in the Sermon on the Mount, meaning peacemakers are actively working to bring reconciliation, reflecting God's nature and earning His blessing and recognition as His children, a pursuit far beyond merely avoiding conflict. This directive involves us pursuing harmony, embodying God's wisdom (pure, gentle, merciful), and our discipleship bringing others to a relationship with God, distinguishing them from mere "peacekeepers" by their active role in resolving conflict and promoting righteousness, often through sacrificial love, as exemplified by Jesus, the "Prince of Peace".
By just googling what the Bible says about peacemakers there is a wealth of information, but here are just a few of the highlights.
Key Biblical Teachings on Peacemakers
-
Matthew 5:9 (The Beatitudes): The core promise: "Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called children of God".
-
Romans 12:18: Urges believers to "live peaceably with all people, as far as it depends on you".
-
James 3:17-18: Describes the wisdom from above as "first pure, then peaceable, gentle, open to reason, full of mercy... And a harvest of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace".
-
-
But the wisdom from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, reasonable, full of mercy and good fruits, unwavering, without hypocrisy. And the seed whose fruit is righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
-
2 Corinthians 5:18: States that God has given believers the "ministry of reconciliation".
-
-
Hebrews 12:14: Encourages to "Strive for peace with everyone, and for the holiness without which no one will see the Lord".
- Pursue peace with all men, and the sanctification without which no one will see the Lord.

Our Senior Adult Class is studying the book of Job, using John MacArthur’s study guide, Job: Trusting God in the Suffering.
Trusting God in Suffering?
Although a direct answer to this question seems important, the book of Job does not set forth such a response. Job never learned the reasons for his suffering. In fact, when God finally confronted Job, he could only put his hand over his mouth and say nothing. His silence underscores the importance of trusting God's purposes in the midst of suffering, because suffering—like all other human experiences—is directed by perfect divine wisdom.
The book of Job teaches that righteous suffering is not always a direct punishment for sin, but rather a profound mystery allowed by God, often as a test of faith, that can lead to a deeper understanding of Him. Ultimately, the book of Job serves as a model for navigating undeserved suffering by maintaining faith in God's character despite the inability to understand His reasons.
