We ask God to guide us in our commitment to ourselves for a more disciplined and consistent prayer life and to intercessory prayer.
What does your prayer life look like? Is it consistent? Is it ongoing communication with God? Or is it just a scheduled ritual, so you can say you checked the box for the day?
|
Here are just a few key points of a strong prayer life:
-
Relationship Over Ritual - Viewing prayer as a vital conversation to build intimacy with God.
-
Variety in Approach - Viewing prayer as a vital conversation to build intimacy with God.
-
Consistency and Persistence - Maintaining a praying without ceasing mindset, which can include brief prayers of guidance before meetings or decisions.
-
Personalization - Using simple, honest language to share the heart, whether through journaling, quiet contemplation, or vocalized prayer.
-
Intentionality - Setting specific, regular times for prayer to ensure it remains a priority.
In an article on Christianity.com , Alicia Searl gives some points as to what our prayer life should look like. Here I will summarize those points and dig deeper into the supporting scriptures.
The first thing is to take the time to recognize Who you are praying to. Even though you have built a personal relationship with God, and He is our loving Father, it is important to show Him the utmost respect and honor.
“You shall follow the LORD your God and fear Him; and you shall keep His commandments, listen to His voice, serve Him, and cling to Him.” Deuteronomy 13:4
Look around you and take in that it is God who has made all things possible. In times of praise and in times of hardships, you will be able to rejoice in the Lord in His faithfulness to keep His promises that will see you through every season of your life.
Think about your relationship with your spouse or your best friend. What makes that relationship what it is? Constant communication, talking constantly about everything. When we take time for any relationship, give it our time, and nurture it, the relationship will grow and become stronger. We must not only nurture our relationship with God but give Him our attention and make Him the first priority in our lives.
Think about how many times throughout the day you find yourself speaking to Him. Don’t just talk to Him when you are in need of His help, go to Him and praise Hm through the joys of your day as well.
Giving thanks to God in every circumstance allows us to surrender it all, knowing that you can’t do this life and live abundantly without Him navigating it.
John 15:5 says, “I am the vine, you are the branches; he who abides in Me and I in him, he bears much fruit, for apart from Me you can do nothing.”

Martin Luther: The Man Who Rediscovered God and Changed the World
by Eric Metaxas
A book recommended by Dr. Chris Bazal
In a decidedly eclectic career, Eric Metaxas has written for VeggieTales, Chuck Colson, Rabbit Ears Productions and the New York Times, four things not ordinarily in the same sentence. He is a best-selling author whose biographies, children’s books, and works of popular apologetics have been translated into more than 25 languages.
|
On All Hallow’s Eve in 1517, a young monk named Martin Luther posted a document he hoped would spark an academic debate, but that instead ignited a conflagration that would forever destroy the world he knew. Five hundred years after Luther’s now famous Ninety-five Theses appeared, Eric Metaxas, acclaimed biographer of the bestselling Bonhoeffer: Pastor, Martyr, Prophet, Spy and Amazing Grace: William Wilberforce and the Heroic Campaign to End Slavery, paints a startling portrait of the wild figure whose adamantine faith cracked the edifice of Western Christendom and dragged medieval Europe into the future. Written in riveting prose and impeccably researched, Martin Luther tells the searing tale of a humble man who, by bringing ugly truths to the highest seats of power, caused the explosion whose sound is still ringing in our ears. Luther’s monumental faith and courage gave birth to the ideals of liberty, equality, and individualism that today lie at the heart of all modern life.
