Psalms 127:3-5 3 Behold, children are a gift of the LORD, The fruit of the womb is a reward. 4 Like arrows in the hand of a warrior, So are the children of one’s youth. 5 How blessed is the man whose quiver is full of them; They will not be ashamed When they speak with their enemies in the gate.
In the cabinet of my pulpit, I keep a special Bible that I only use for preaching. It’s called a “Pulpit Bible.” Its font style, size, and verse structure are laid out in a way that makes it easier and faster to reference while preaching. I keep it in its original box to protect it because it is very special to me.
In that box, along with the Bible, are some other very special items: encouragement cards from our children’s ministries. At times, our kids write and draw pictures on cards and give them to me. I have cards from kids who have grown up and since gone on to college; some even have families of their own now.
These cards have proven to be a tremendous source of encouragement—not just personal encouragement. Although they have provided that to a great degree, they are amazing reminders of not only the future of our church but also the success of the church in the past to disciple our children.
On occasion, I take these cards out and read them again. I also list the dates on them to keep track of when they were written and drawn. So many of our kids have gone through our children’s program, youth program, graduated high school, and gone on to college or joined the workforce, taking their faith with them.
Some of them are pastors now; some are missionaries. Others are leaders in ministries within their schools and workplaces. Even our youngest children are bold in their faith in their respective schools and extracurricular activities. Some of our graduates work in very interesting fields where they have been able to implement their Biblical knowledge and reach people that many of us would never have the opportunity to engage. My daughter, who is now 25, works for a company that “trains” Artificial Intelligence to answer Biblical questions. Who knew that would be a thing?!
Take a moment to thank the Lord for our children’s ministry, youth ministry, the leaders, parents, and the children and youth. Pray for them. As we fight the good fight as soldiers of the Kingdom of God, many times we forget one of our most effective methods of gaining new territory for the King are our “arrows”.
